Stowe Interchange Ramp to U.S. 422 East to Close for Eight Months for Reconstruction

King of Prussia, PA – The ramp from Grosstown Road at the Stowe Interchange to eastbound U.S. 422 will be closed beginning Monday morning, July 9, through mid-March 2019, for ramp reconstruction as part of a major improvement project to rebuild 1.2 miles of U.S. 422 from just east of the Schuylkill River bridge to just west of the Montgomery County line in North Coventry Township, Chester County, West Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, and Douglass Township, Berks County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the eight-month closure, motorists will be directed to use High Street and southbound Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) to access eastbound U.S. 422. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur.

Under this improvement project, PennDOT is reconstructing U.S. 422 on both existing and new alignments; reconfiguring the U.S. 422/Stowe Interchange to a diamond configuration; removing and replacing the existing ramps and culverts; installing new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, message boards, signing, pavement markings, lighting, concrete median barriers, median glare screens and guide rail; upgrading stormwater management facilities and pipes; and constructing and restoring wetlands.

H & K Group, Inc. of Schwenksville, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $35,581,408 improvement project which is financed with 100 percent state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania’s Transportation Plan. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in late 2020.

Grosstown Road Bridge in West Pottsgrove Township Open to Traffic

Construction to be complete after Overlay Surface is applied to Bridge Deck

King of Prussia, PA – The Grosstown Road (Route 4042) bridge, which spans Manatawny Creek in West Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, reopened to traffic today. This bridge was replaced as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project and allows PennDOT to remove it from the state’s structurally deficient bridge list.

With the bridge reopened, motorists may notice a slight bump as they drive across the bridge until a polyester polymer concrete (PPC) overlay is applied to the deck. This is often the final step in completing box beam bridge projects. The PPC overlay is designed to protect the deck from the wear and tear brought about by Pennsylvania’s harsh winters and reduce the long-term maintenance costs.

The polyester material can only be applied when temperatures are consistently above 40 degrees, dry weather is forecasted and after the bridge concrete has cured for at least 30 days. An alternating traffic pattern will be controlled by flaggers when the PPC overlay is applied in spring 2018.

To find out when the overlay will be applied to this structure, visit www.parapidbridges.com/polyesterpolymerconcreteoverlay.html. In the event of unfavorable weather, this schedule may change. Any such changes will be posted on the website.

This bridge is referred to as JV-219 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project. Replacement work for this bridge was performed by Walsh Construction II.

The Rapid Bridge Replacement Project is a public-private partnership (P3) between PennDOT and Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners (PWKP), under which PWKP will finance, design, replace, and maintain the bridges for 25 years. The P3 approach will allow PennDOT to replace the bridges more quickly while achieving significant savings and minimizing impact on motorists.

To see the bridges included in the statewide initiative and to learn more about the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project and P3 in Pennsylvania, visit www.p3forpa.pa.gov. Additional information on the project, the team, and how to bid on the project can be found at www.parapidbridges.com.
